Special Education

Riverside University High School (RUHS) is committed to being a diverse, multicultural, urban high school with a primary focus on the preparation of students for success in post-secondary educational settings. The shared efforts of students, parents, and staff will result in lifelong learners and productive citizens in the global community. RUHS is also known for its award-winning music, bilingual and special education programs. RUHS, “the school that has it all,” features outstanding athletic teams, musicals, after-school activities and student leadership. Parents are welcomed as partners in the teaching and learning process.

RUHS does have an application process. Please see the school website for more information.

Overview

  • Over 20 Special Education Teachers
  • Support students who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the Common Core Essential Elements (CCEE)
  • Transition Coordinator (assists with creating post-secondary plans for higher education or work force)

Multi-Categorical

The majority of students attending RUHS with an IEP are supported primarily in the regular education classroom with their peers. Regular Education and Special Education Teachers work together to ensure proper supports are in place for individual student success. Supports and specially designed instruction are provided on an individual basis as indicated in the students IEP. Students will graduate with a diploma after meeting graduation requirements.

Bridging

Students who are making the adjustments from learning on the CCEE to the CCSS work with our Bridging Teachers. Regular Education and Special Education Teachers work together to ensure the supports and specially designed instruction meet the needs of the individual students. Students participate in lifetime classes that are specifically designed to assist students with this transition. Students will graduate with a diploma after meeting graduation requirements.

Alternative State Standards

The Alternative State Standards are also known as the Common Core Essential Elements (CCEE). Students achieving these standards have qualified for these standards based on academic and functional testing results. They are working toward a certificate of completion and will be attending until 21 years of age.
