Get ready! MPS’s first day of school is Tuesday, September 3 — here is what families need to know

August 19, 2024 by Shawn

The first day of school is almost here! We are excited to welcome back students and staff.

Here is everything families need to know to have their students ready to learn on Day One.

The first day of class for all MPS schools will be Tuesday, September 3, 2024. The full district calendar for the 2024-25 school year is available in multiple languages.

Is Your Information up to Date?

It is very important for MPS to have the most accurate information for families and their students, including address, phone number, email, and emergency contact information.

This will allow the district to provide important updates about transportation, events, weather-related closings, and more.

Families should log in to Campus Parent at mpsmke.com/parentportal or through the Infinite Campus mobile app as soon as possible to make sure their information is accurate.

If any information is out of date, families should visit their school to submit current information.

Need Help with Campus Parent?

Families who don’t have a Campus Parent account may contact their school or their school’s parent coordinator. They will help set up the account and enter information.

Get to Know Your Parent Coordinator!

Every MPS school has a dedicated parent coordinator who organizes events and sends school communications. Watch for messages from your parent coordinator!

Transportation — Watch for Mail!

Families, if your child is eligible for busing to school, you should receive a postcard with details in the mail about a week before school starts on September 3. You will receive an email, text, or phone call as a reminder on the Friday before school starts.

If your child’s address and other information are inaccurate in Infinite Campus, it could create issues for your student’s busing schedule. Please make sure your information is accurate! Visit your school to update the information on file in Campus Parent if anything is incorrect.

More busing information is available on the MPS Transportation webpage.

Free Breakfast and Lunch for All

Milwaukee Public Schools is proud to offer free meals that follow USDA guidelines to every student in the district on school days. We encourage all students to participate in the breakfast and lunch programs.

New this school year: Students will find more menu options. They will have more than one lunch entree to choose from every school day.

For more information: Visit the MPS Nutrition Services webpage, and watch for updates.

Remember: Have Your Child Immunized

Childhood immunizations reduce illnesses and harm to children. Have your child immunized, and be sure to provide your child’s vaccination records to the school.

Children should be immunized before school starts, if possible, or watch for news of vaccination clinics in September and October.

Childhood immunizations are required by law. Medical waivers are available for children who are not medically able to be vaccinated; a note from your child’s health care provider is acceptable.

To find out which immunizations are required: Call your doctor or the Milwaukee Health Department, (414) 286-8034. See more at the MPS immunizations webpage.

New: Updates to Our Visitor Policy

Visitors are welcome in MPS. Because the safety of all children is important to us, MPS has visitor procedures in place. All visitors must:

  • Use the designated main entrance.

  • Report to the office/security desk.

  • Show a form of identification.

  • Sign in on the MPS Visitor Record.

  • Wear/display the MPS Visitor Pass at all times while in the school.

  • Be escorted to the requested location.

  • Return the Visitor Pass to the office/security desk and sign out.

Visitors are limited to TWO per student for meetings, conferences, and classroom visits unless approved by the building administrator or designee.

See the Parent/Student Handbook

The visitor policy and other important information about school rules, behavior and discipline, attendance, student records, transportation, winter weather, and family supports are available in the Parent/Student Handbook on Rights, Responsibilities, and Discipline.

All families are asked to read the Handbook before the start of school.

How to Be Ready on Day One

You can help your child get ready for school in the weeks leading up to Day One.

Get into a school routine… Start setting an appropriate bedtime and wakeup time a week or more before school begins. A well-rested child is ready to learn.

Prepare the night before… Getting in the habit of planning the next day’s outfit will get everyone out the door faster in the morning.

Get school supplies ready… Find supply lists for preschool through middle school on the MPS Supply Lists webpage. High school instructors will tell their students which supplies are needed.

Read to (or with) young children… And encourage older students to read on their own. Reading at home will help them achieve in school!

Every. Day. Counts.

It’s very important that your child is in school and on time daily. We look forward to seeing your child in class!
