Liebe Eltern! Dear Parents and Guardians of 2nd Grade!
Here are a couple of important procedures and expectations of Second Grade.
1) Reading Log Books (Lese-Heft)
Please help your child with completing the book report(s) for every month as well as with keeping track of how many minutes he/she read. We encourage you to teach your child the responsibility of keeping track as well as the self-initiative to read on his/her own. The idea of monthly book reports may be new to you as well as your child, so it is therefore crucial that you understand the concept, responsibility and lasting effect of it. Please feel free to ask your child’s teacher if you have any questions.
2) English Reading
As your child is being introduced to formal English instruction, we ask you to support and guide your child with his/her reading endeavors. Take the time to model a positive attitude towards reading for your child. This will ultimately help your child gaining the anchor reading skills. In 2nd Grade we are “learning to read” but soon your child will be “reading to learn”. Be engaged in child’s reading process and progress and feel free to ask questions to check for your child’s understanding and comprehension.
- Here is a link to the top 100 children’s books: http://www.scholastic.com/100books/ Check for award winners (Caldecott and/or Newberry) between the ages of 6 and 9. That should help you select appropriate books for your child.
- English children’s literature offers a vast selection of high quality children’s books (from the classic Mother Goose books to Folktales, Longtales, Fairy Tales, storybooks, pop-up books, concept books, informational books to biographies, fictional and nonfictional books, African-American Literature, Multicultural books, Fantasy, etc. Here is a listing of a couple of award-winning authors that might help you with your selection:
- Eric Carle, Kate Di Camillo, Jerry Spinelli, Lois Ehlert (local author from Milwaukee), Peter Sis, Nikki Giovanni, Avi, Brother’s Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Tomie De Paola, Lois Lowry, Gary Paulsen, Karen Cushman, and Allen Say – only to mention a few. Please feel free to ask me questions if you need additional info.
3) Standards-Based Report Card
For grading purposes, we are using the Common Core Standards-Based 4-Scale of Advanced (AD), Proficient (PR), Basic (BA) and Minimal (MI). Click here to view the MPS parent guide on the Standards-Based Report Card for 2nd Grade. We hope this will help you with your understanding as this concept may be new to you.
4) Homework
You can usually expect one homework assignment per day. Please make sure you child completes the homework and turns it in the next day. At times, there might be an additional Math homework coming home as well. Please also encourage your child to complete all in-class assignments in school. We want to clearly point out that unfinished school work becomes an automatic homework assignment. We absolutely understand if occasionally other matters take precedence (family emergency, etc.) and homework cannot be completed. However, on a general basis we expect your child to be a responsible student and complete the homework after school at home on the day it was assigned. In case something comes up, please send a note with your child so that we know why he/she couldn’t complete the homework.
