Homework First
Homework First is an initiative taking place in more than three dozen elementary schools in the Milwaukee Public Schools system that makes learning a team effort for children from the city’s low-income neighborhoods. Beginning in second grade, the program uses incentives, parental support, and the encouragement of community members to help students understand that handing in their assignments on time is a major responsibility. Homework First is made possible by funding from the Helen Bader Foundation.
SCPMH – School Community Partnership for Mental Health
Metcalfe is now partnering with Lutheran Social Services to offer in-school mental health supports for students who do not have access to it in the community.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
PBIS is a joint effort between Milwaukee Public Schools Office of Family Services and the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association to effectively reduce classroom disruptions and student suspensions through a school-wide systematic tiered-intervention approach. Data shows that schools that implement PBIS with fidelity see decreases in disruptions and suspensions and increases in student achievement.
SHARP Literacy
SHARP Literacy energizes urban school children to become confident, capable readers, writers and researchers, using the visual arts to engage young minds and reinforce learning. Providing them with opportunities to develop a wide range of skills – reading, writing, oral communications, research, creating thinking and problem solving – SHARP creates a solid foundation for future learning and success. On pre-and post vocabulary tests, SHARP students improve their literacy skills between 40-70%.
Spark Literacy
The SPARK Early Literacy Program brings literacy into all spheres of a child’s life: home, community and school. With our partner schools, teachers identify students for SPARK who are in grades kindergarten through third grade and are struggling readers. During the school day, students then participate in one-on-one instruction or small group tutoring sessions with an Early Literacy Instructor/SPARK Tutor.
Safe Place
In partnership with local youth serving and neighborhood agencies, Safe Places offer before and after school educational, recreational, and social activities for youth at elementary and K-8 MPS locations. Under the direction of trained staff from these agency partners, Safe Places provide youth with opportunities to get help with homework, engage in educational and social enrichment activities, and play in safe environments away from unwanted influences. Safe Places also support families through opportunities for family involvement in various activities and social events. A nominal program fee is charged.
The Links Incorporated, Milwaukee Chapter
The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946. The membership consists of 12,000 professional women of color in 270 chapters located in 42 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. It is one of the nation′s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. Our members are influential decision makers and opinion leaders. The Links, Incorporated has four basic facets which drive their programs and strategies:
Local chapters develop programs and strategies, which are implemented through public information and education, economic development, and public policy campaigns. The Milwaukee Links, Inc are a part of the Central Region, whose theme is “POWERING THE PROMISE”. Our chapter’s efforts are focused on creating meaningful, purposeful and sustainable programs, which will provide services to our communities. Throughout our existence, The Milwaukee Links have held true to the basic tenet of friendship that is indeed the cornerstone of our organization.
ACE (Arts in Community Education)
Arts in Community Education integrates music and art into daily core subjects. In addition Milwaukee Ballet has been an ACE partner for 20 years. This Nationally acclaimed program of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra enhances education through the integration of music and art into the school curriculum.
Our 2nd – 4th grade students are part of the residence programs. This year we will experience The Nutcracker and Peter Pan. Our entire school will be exposed to ballet in a box. A super hero themed production is on its way.
Milwaukee Fire Department
Ralph Metcalfe has teamed up with 4 Firefighters; Brad, Tyler, Brian and Brandon from Engine 32 who come to Metcalfe to read to our 3rd through 5th grade students weekly. During their busy schedules of helping others throughout the city they still find time to help our youth improve their reading skills.
Milwaukee Repertory Reading Residency
Developed six years ago, the Reading Residency Program uses theater to teach literacy skills by engaging students in classroom activities developed around a specific production from our season.
NorthWestern Mutual – A Time to Read
Students in the 3rd and 4th grade are paired with a mentor weekly after school. They read a chapter book and engage in reading activities. It is also a great way for students to build a positive relationship with an adult in our community.
