About CrossFit and CrossFit Kids

CrossFit
CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.
…The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.

CrossFit Kids
CrossFit Kids is a method for teaching CrossFit to children ages 3-18. Based on the principle of Mechanics, Consistency and then Intensity, CrossFit Kids emphasizes good movement throughout childhood and adolescence. Consistently good mechanics translates to physical literacy, enhanced sports performance and fewer sports injuries for kids. Not only that, a vast body of research indicates that exercise is beneficial to cognitive function, which means consistent adherence to the program can have a positive impact on children’s academic achievement.
CrossFit Kids is meant to be BIG fun for all ages. Broad-Inclusive-General fun. Fun means we provide an active alternative to sedentary pursuits, which means less childhood obesity and all-around better health for our children. Further, the needs of second graders and high-school varsity wrestlers differ by degree and not kind; the program is scalable for any age or experience level and accounts for the varied maturation status one can find in a class full of kids. CrossFit Kids is designed to be minimalist; it is inexpensive and often requires little or no equipment, allowing a wide array of socioeconomic groups an opportunity to be physically fit and physically active throughout their lives.
CrossFit Kids programs can be found in over 1,800 gyms and more than 1,000 schools worldwide.

About CrossFit MPS
CrossFit MPS is a non-profit cost-free CrossFit Affiliate and CrossFit Kids Program dedicated solely to the students and staff of Milwaukee Public Schools. CrossFit, Inc. and CrossFit Kids are generous supporters of federal, state, and municipal entities such as the military, law enforcement agencies, fire and rescue agencies, and public colleges, universities, and schools. As a result of this support, we are able to offer CrossFit to the students and staff of Milwaukee Public Schools at no cost.
CrossFit MPS was founded in June 2012 by Milwaukee Public School Teachers Chip Johnston and Amanda Schenk. Chip Johnston is a former college athlete who found a tremendous amount of success from following CrossFit. Amanda Schenk, a health/physical education teacher and a former college athlete, is aware of the crisis surrounding the health of the young people in both Milwaukee and the United States in general. Realizing both the effectiveness of CrossFit as a health and fitness program and the incredible health and fitness needs of young people they began searching for ways to bring CrossFit to the students of Milwaukee Public Schools. Thanks to both Milwaukee Public Schools and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction they discovered a grant opportunity that has allowed them to bring CrossFit to both the students and staff of Milwaukee Public Schools through the founding of CrossFit MPS and its CrossFit Kids Program.

CrossFit MPS Mission
To offer a health and fitness program that uses constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity in an effort to develop increased work capacity over broad time and modal domains, and ultimately over a lifetime. And to offer this program to the students and staff of Milwaukee Public Schools for no profit and at no cost so they may use it to provide and support positive change for themselves, their families, and their community.

CrossFit MPS Vision
A community of students and staff who use their public schools as a place to help each other develop physical, mental, emotional, and social health and strength. And who take that strength and use it to support positive change wherever they are.

Coaches

Amanda Schenk
Amanda Schenk is one of the founding coaches of CrossFit MPS and its CrossFit Kids Program. Working as a physical education teacher and athletic director for the past few years she has seen potential in our students and student-athletes and has also seen some promising athletes not reach that potential. CrossFit will be an avenue to work with athletes as well as non-athletes to reach their full athletic ability.
Amanda has been a participant in sports and athletics for as long as she can remember. She played sports throughout high school and college both competitively and recreationally. Amanda is also an avid SCUBA diver and U.S. Coast Guard Certified Merchant Marine Officer. She was introduced to CrossFit by Chip Johnston as a way to improve her fitness. Amanda is looking forward to working with students and staff in order to help them reach and maintain their health and fitness goals.
