Dear Honey Creek School Community,
Hello friends, parents, and students! My name is Laura Biesterveld and I am the Principal at Honey Creek School. I grew up on a farm in Western Wisconsin, attended UW-Claire for my bachelor’s degree in education. I moved to Milwaukee in 1996 and began teaching for MPS at Cass Street School. I completed my master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction and Leadership in 2005. I came to Honey Creek in August of 2006 as a Curriculum Generalist. When I started at Honey Creek, I was sure I would be leaving shortly to lead a school of my own. Little did I know at that time, how much of my heart the Honey Creek community would steal. I interviewed for other positions, but I was meant to stay here with my Honey Creek family. Budget cuts came along and I made the decision to stay at Honey Creek in a teaching position. Honey Creek is a special place and I felt it was right to continue my journey here.
Honey Creek is a K4 – grade 5 school with a capacity of 375 students. It is my honor to work with bright and beautiful children, a champion staff, and involved parents. It is our mission to provide a quality educational program full of rich and meaningful experiences for all of our children so that they are on the path for college and career readiness! Those of you who have met and worked with me over the years know that you can expect tireless dedication, fairness, and high standards for students, staff, and me along with a positive attitude and continuous recognition of student and staff achievement.
I am a firm believer in securing the safety of every member of our school community and find that if we require students to take responsibility for small mistakes or unwise choices more serious challenges are less likely to occur. Honey Creek has a nurturing environment and students understand that our guidelines are made with their safety and educational success in mind. Staff and students want to be here because they know they are truly cared for. This highly positive atmosphere makes academic advancement and emotional well-being a reality. Our students work diligently to meet the expectations of the Common Core State Standards and we continue to strive to reach even higher levels of achievement in all subject areas.
Honey Creek parents are key stakeholders and they participate in a multitude of opportunities that keep them involved in their child/children’s education. Students rely on a strong support system as they develop into confident, responsible, and productive decision makers who are prepared to meet the demands of the global economy. We offer a variety of events throughout the year so that Honey Creek families have the opportunity to experience Honey Creek’s learning environment first hand, interact with other families, and build a strong connection between other families, students, staff, and the community.
I look forward to working closely with all of you every school year and vow to uphold Honey Creek School’s reputation as a quality educational institute as well as to elevate programming and student achievement in the months and years ahead!
I welcome and encourage all volunteers willing to work with children to contact Honey Creek at (414) 604-7900. Families interested in enrolling their child/children are welcome to call and schedule a personal tour of our school. Our educational program sells itself!
Sincerely,
Laura Biesterveld
