The Alice Bertschy Kadish Memorial Weaving Center is a tribute to Alice, longtime member of the MPS Recreation Department’s Weaving Studio and a retired Milwaukee Public School teacher. The Weaving Center, a collaboration among the Wisconsin Handweavers, Inc., Milwaukee Public Schools, the MPS Recreation Division, and the Kadish Foundation, provides weaving and related arts education for people of all ages.
Weaving is being passed on to students at Gaenslen School who learn to weave through the volunteer efforts of members of the Wisconsin Handweavers, Inc.
Features of the Center include:
- More than 80 looms and weaving accessories
- Yarns and supplies for weaving, knitting, and other fiber projects
- A stovetop and sink for dyeing and basketry
- A kitchen area with a refrigerator and microwave
- An extensive weaving library to inspire and educate
In addition to weaving classes, the Center often offers:
- Dyeing
- Basketry
- Book Arts
- Multi-media jewelry
- Knitting
- Felting
- Other related arts classes
