Have you ever felt like everything you do comes out wrong? You work on a project for school, then when it’s time to present it everything comes out the wrong way?
READ:
Brambleheart: A Story About Finding Treasure and the Unexpected Magic of Friendship
by Henry Cole
In a world where you have to pass a test in order to get your final name, job, and place in society, Twig, a chipmunk living in a world of human waste, is having a difficult time at school. He fails at one project after another, and when he can’t stand it anymore, he makes an unusual discovery that will change his life forever and help him find his true self.
This book, for students age 9 and up, includes some magical elements and subliminal tones of how the two-legged (people) have trashed nature and animals’ reaction to it. The illustrations by author Henry Cole are a great addition.

#bookaday: Lost in the Sun by Lisa Graff
Do you believe in second chances? What if you played a major role in an accident which ended the life of someone? What would you do?
READ:
Lost in the Sun by Lisa Graff. Trent Zimmerman was involved in a freak accident when he was in fifth grade. This tragic accident has left him with a gargantuan sense of guilt and now that sixth grade begins he has no problem proving to everyone they are right in thinking he is a bad kid . Encountering the classic bully at school, plus having a creep of a father, makes his inner struggle worse. Fallon Little and a couple other minor characters become crucial in Trent’s healing.
Fourth grade and up.

#bookaday: How to Speak Dolphin by Ginny Rorby.
Is it fair for wild animals to be kept in constructed environments so people can be entertained and money be collected? What if the animal is sick? Can you claim that something has been proven if the research is not done following the scientific methodology?
READ:
How to Speak Dolphin by Ginny Rorby. For a short book with many different threads woven together this was done quite well. Lily, the main character, is a sixth grader having to deal with too much on her shoulders. Her brother Adam is four years old, severely autistic, and requires a lot of help he is not currently receiving from a stream of nannies who continue to quit. We quickly find out that Lily’s mom has died. Lily’s stepdad, an oncology doctor, doesn’t have a clue as to how to deal with his son or his stepdaughter. Like Lily, his grief is still ever present.
Then there is Nori, the dolphin who becomes ill and is “recuperating” at an aquarium. What part will Nori play in all this?
You will have to read the book to find out. I will tell you right away that what you think will and will not happen will take you by surprise. The book is perfect for a read aloud with plenty of discussions about the many issues brought up. I highly recommend it. Fourth grade and up.

Recently, a first grade student showed
the librarian the work she
completed on her free time.
This poster illustrates what she
learned during her self-directed
study of horses.
This student, whose first language is
English, read books in Spanish about
horses and completed her work
entirely in Spanish.
We are proud of our bilingual students!

Books. You never know how they will make a connection with us.
Yesterday, out of the blue, one student came to me and said, “Ms. Mayra, you know that book I checked out? That’s the best book I EVER read!” This unsolicited comment reminded me of the power of a school library in our students’ lives.
