Our diverse learners are peaceful truth-tellers and change-makers through culturally-sustaining bilingual education.
Our Philosophy
La Escuela Fratney is a safe and respectful place for all: students, staff, families and community. Inside the walls of this building there is a multicultural, multilingual, antiracist environment that engages students in a program of academic excellence in English and Spanish.
Families are recognized as the first teachers of their children, and it is with their support and participation that we make our school a caring and responsive place. Our school goes beyond the four concrete walls. They are permeable and allow us to go into the community, as well as allow the community to flow inside to us. We are a part of the broader Riverwest neighborhood and the city of Milwaukee.
The curriculum is rigorous and is guided by the highest standards of the district, but in addition, the teaching and learning that takes place here is:
- Grounded in the lives of the students
- Participatory and experiential
- Culturally sensitive
- “Critical” in that it helps students to “talk back” to the world
- And at the same time hopeful, joyful, kind and visionary
These high standards apply as well to the staff at La Escuela Fratney. They are a dedicated group of well educated professionals, who as Paulo Freire said, “live part of their dreams in their educational space.” With a focus on shared mission and collaboration, their role is to implement our rigorous and visionary curriculum.
We are teaching the future citizens of our community. By using best practice, critical thinking, and anti-violence strategies, we are preparing students for a global experience that will challenge them to be the truth-tellers and change-makers of tomorrow.
