Fernwood Montessori School was established in 1983. Originally designed to serve K3 through 5th grade, the program was expanded to include adolescent students in 1995. After 18 years in the Greenfield School Building at 35th and Mitchell, the school moved to its present Bay View location at 3239 S. Pennsylvania Avenue. Our school name was changed from Greenfield Montessori School to Fernwood Montessori School out of respect for the history and traditions of the 94-year-old school that has became the current home of the Montessori program.
We are proud to serve a diverse student population ranging in age from 3 to 14. Approximately seven hundred and eighty students work in multi-age classrooms under the guidance of twenty-six AMI certified teachers.
Children with special education needs are fully included at all levels from K3 to 8th grade. Students receive special education services for learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, speech and language impairments and significant developmental delays. Five full time special education teachers (1 early childhood teacher and 4 first through 8th grade resource teachers) provide services to meet the students’ individualized education plans. A speech pathologist, social worker, psychologist, and a guidance counselor also assist in evaluating and educating the students. Students’ special educational needs are met in resource rooms and in the regular education classrooms.
