Our Camp staff, made up of parents, grandparents, and school staff, has scheduled activities daily. These include: a snack, exercise and structured active play, a time for assisted homework and reading, peer tutoring, art, STEM activities, and group games. The kids are actively involved with Math Hoops and compete with area schools. We host activity nights such as Movie Night, Game Night, Craft Night, which offer opportunities for parents to stay and play. Our mornings start at 6:30am and include some morning physical activity and breakfast, and our evenings extend until 6:00pm.
Extracurriculars
Did you know that Fairview School has over 14 extra curricular activities! The enrichment opportunities abound on the academic side with our Math Meets and Forensics. Students campaign to become elected representatives on Student Council, and strive to be nominated into National Junior Honor Society in our Middle School. We have Cadets starting in 4th grade, who become student leaders and mentors to the lower grades, and Chess Club starting in 1st grade who get to compete in tournaments as their skill levels increase. Our musical enrichment includes piano available as an extra starting in 2nd grade, harp in 3rd grade, band in 4th grade and WSMA (solo & ensemble contest) starting in 6th grade. Athletically, we offer Cross Country, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, and Poms/Cheer at various levels. Our Camp also competes annually in Math Hoops. Our school is also host to 6 Boy Scout Troops, K5 and up; and currently, 5 Girl Scout Troops form Daisies on up!
STEM
Did you know that Fairview has an integrated a STEM program which involves our students from Kindergarten through 8th grade? Using curriculum from Project Lead the Way Launch, our Kindergarten through 2nd grade students explore everything from forces and structures to animal adaptations and human body functions. Students practice teamwork and problem solving as they move through the design process real engineers use!
In our 3rd through 5th grades, Robotics, computer programming, simple/complex machines and genetics are a few of the topics students get to dive into. They continue to use the design process to solve problems and explore concepts through hands-on activities. Fairview was the first school in Milwaukee Public schools to have a comprehensive K-8 Project Lead the Way program.
The 6-8 program consists of three, 12 week courses each year. All 6th-8th grade students get 12 weeks that focus on Design and Modeling, Automation, and Robotics. Projects include designing light switch plates, consumer products, playgrounds and cell phone cases in Autocad. Student designs are selectively printed in our 3D printing lab. Students also learn mechanisms and simple machines in their Robotics course. Students use VEX Robotics parts and RobotC programming language to solve real world problems. Projects include designing automated bridges, self guiding vehicles and assembly line production models. Fairview is at the forefront in offering computer science courses throughout the 6-8 experience. Students start out with the basics learning HTML and CSS coding to create websites from scratch. Next, they progress to the graphic arts, and finally move onto creating original Apps for Android based devices. Students complete the computer science course by learning how to access API’s to share information and code breaking.
