The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is offered at Mary McLeod Bethune Academy to assist students who have limited English speaking skills. For many students who have recently immigrated or come from communities of recent immigrants and refugees, ESL is a learning space for community development and self-empowerment. The misconceptions of ESL suggest that ESL is about assimilation or glorifying native English speakers. Instead, ESL recognizes the disparities within the education system, such as standardized testing. Thus, students can build confidence and cultivate knowledge through our ESL resources.
