History
The Student Government Association (S.G.A.) had its beginning at Bay View High School during World War II. In 1998, the S.G.A. celebrated its own 50th Anniversary.
Structure
The S.G.A. is comprised of two main branches: The Senate and the Executive Student Board. The Student Board from applications submitted by the students forms permanent committees. Incoming freshman and other new students are able to apply from positions on committees and Usher Club, and as Senators. These two groups serve as a link between administration, faculty and the student body so that the groups may be united in working together for the betterment of the school. The S.G.A. operates under the philosophy that “Students should be responsible for as many situations as they show themselves capable of handling.”
SGA Committees
- Permanent Committees: All committees of the S.G.A., permanent and temporary, are responsible to and under the full control of the Student Board. Each Committee has an “ex-officio” member from the Board.
- Election Committee: The Election Committee is in charge of all S.G.A. elections throughout the school year, including the Homecoming and the Prom courts. Copies of election procedures are available in the S.G.A. Office.
- Public Relations Committee: This committee has the duty of informing students about S.G.A. related activities and concerns and other community activities through publicity and campaigns of all kinds. The committee at times assists other school organizations in publicizing noteworthy events. They maintain three large bulletin boards, in addition to numerous small bulletin boards throughout the building.
- Homecoming Activities Committee: All aspects of the Homecoming parade in the fall are planned and executed by this group. Members handle promotion, registration, arrangement of units and the sending of special invitations prior to the parade, and they manage the parade order and judging on parade day. Other activities the committee may plan include a spirit week and assisting with the halftime ceremony.
- Homecoming and Prom Committees: These groups plan all aspects of these two annual dances, including the selection of music, theme and refreshments, plus determining the dinner and keep sake for prom. They also do all the decorating for the Homecoming dance at the school and Prom at its off-campus site.
- Student Activity Council: This council is comprised of leaders or representatives of all student activity groups in the school. They meet periodically to discuss the activity calendar, fundraising, activities fairs and other matters of concern.
- Temporary Committees: When the need arises, both the Senate and the Board may appoint committees to do special jobs or look into special subjects pertinent to Bay View High School. Temporary committees exist no longer than the school year for which they are established, but can be reestablished.
- Usher Club: A “crew” of students is organized for theatrical performances scheduled throughout the year. Meetings are held before every event to set work schedules and responsibilities.
