Auer Avenue is a COMMUNITY SCHOOL. In 2015 Auer Avenue Community School became part of the Milwaukee Community School Partnership. The goal of Community Schools is to transform schools into places where students, families, staff, and the surrounding community can work together to ensure every student is successful. Community Schools place the focus on the whole child by providing academic supports, social and emotional learning, health and wellness, family and community engagement, and a safe and supportive climate. Each Community School may use different strategies and activities to improve its school and community, but each share these guiding practices: Equity, Share Leadership & Cultural Relevance.
Auer Avenue Community School offers Head Start programming. It is vital for children to have a strong academic foundation. Children’s first classroom experience should be a positive time that builds self-esteem and confidence as they continue to learn and grow. Auer Avenue’s Head Start program offers a half- or full-day classroom experience, solid curriculum to establish school-readiness skills, individualized educational experiences, daily breakfast/snack and lunch and more! The program is approximately three hours per day (morning or afternoon sessions) with some full-day options for three-year-olds. Four-year-olds attend school all day. Check with the Head Start office at 414-252-0350 for specific program lengths and enrollment information.
Auer Avenue Community School is one of the original MPS schools! Auer Avenue Community School was built in 1903 and is currently the 22nd oldest school in Milwaukee Public Schools. Its original name was Twentieth District School No. 4. For a period of time around 1894, the school hosted a branch of the Milwaukee Public Library within its walls. The name was changed to Auer Avenue School in 1912 to identify it by its street address. Auer Avenue, and in turn, Auer Avenue School, was named after Louis Auer, a member of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors from 1868 to 1880. In 1967 an addition was added to the school, this is now where Auer’s 4th Grade, 5th Grade and support staff are located. In 2015 Auer Avenue joined the Milwaukee Community School Partnership and became AUER AVENUE COMMUNITY SCHOOL!
