Allen-Field Elementary School proudly features a Bilingual-Bicultural Program. Designed to provide positive academic experiences and skill successes for linguistically and culturally distinct students, the Bilingual-Bicultural Program affirms achievements for students in their first language (Spanish) while learning English. Early academic success shapes a student’s self-assurance in his or her own abilities and builds the confidence for long-term performance in school.
The Bilingual-Bicultural Program enhances the attainment of language skills while promoting an appreciation for the Hispanic culture. Basic reading, writing and language arts skill are emphasized. Family support is critical to the success of the program as parents work with the teachers to praise good progress and work on weaker skill areas. With high academic and performance goals in all core subject areas, expectations for bilingual-bicultural students are the same as for native English-speaking students. For more information on the core subject areas, see the Academics tab on this site.
At the Elementary level, students in kindergarten and grade 1 receive initial instruction in Spanish with more formal English reading being introduced in grade 2. Classes are taught in small group and full classroom formats. The Bilingual-Bicultural Program is designed to ensure that English Language Learners (ELL) students are proficient, fluent and literate in English. At the same time, the program ensures the retention and progression of the primary language (Spanish). The native language is integrated into the solid acquisition of the second language (English). In addition, English As a Second Language (ESL) services are incorporated to improve listening, speaking, reading and writing expertise.
Upon completion of the Bilingual-Bicultural Program at Allen-Field, students have several options available to continue their dual-language education within MPS at the Middle and High School levels. Please contact the school office for the different types of specialized programs available and which schools would best fit a particular student’s abilities.
